Our Story

Surf Check Surf School was founded in 2025 by two ocean-loving friends, Michael “Chili” McDonald and Dr. Scott Wilson. Chili is a longtime surfer with a heart for teaching, while Scott brings years of experience in ocean safety and youth education. Together, they created a surf school where everyone, no matter their age or experience, can learn in a safe, fun, and welcoming environment. What began as a few boards and a big dream has grown into a trusted local surf school with a strong reputation in the New Smyrna Beach community. Today, Surf Check is more than just lessons, it’s about building confidence, creating memories, and inspiring a lifelong love for the ocean. Whether you’re six or sixty, our instructors are here to help you feel comfortable, supported, and totally stoked.

Our Philosophy

At Surf Check, we believe the ocean is for everyone. That’s why our lessons are designed to be positive, inclusive, and downright fun. We know learning something new can feel a little scary, especially when it involves waves! But don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Our certified instructors know how to teach at your pace, keep things lighthearted, and cheer you on every step of the way. We focus on safety, ocean awareness, and giving you the tools to surf with confidence. Whether you’re learning how to pop up, paddle out, or ride your first clean wave, we’ll make sure the experience is safe, exciting, and unforgettable. Surfing teaches more than just balance, it builds courage, respect for nature, and a whole lot of smiles.

What We Offer

We offer a range of lessons for every type of surfer. Private lessons give you one-on-one attention and a customized pace. Group lessons are perfect for friends, couples, or families who want to learn together. Got little ones? Our kid-specific sessions are built around fun, safety, and positive encouragement, plus lots of high fives. All lessons include surfboards, rash guards, and helpful instruction from our friendly, certified coaches. But the fun doesn’t stop there! We also offer Surf Check apparel, equipment rentals, and tasty, healthy post-surf snacks to refuel after your session. Whether you’re with us for an hour or a full day, we aim to make every moment special.
